Identification Notes:
Spores are pale ocher; growth up to 5 inches; cap diameter of up to 6 inches. Russula paludosa has a slightly redder cap and is bitter to acrid; its cut flesh may turn gray but not black. Russula vinosa is a graying conifer species but has a purple cap.
